Description:

The walk begins from the Walna Scar road carpark ( grid ref. = SD2889 9707) above Coniston. It may be worth calling in to the car park in Coniston village on the way, as there is a toilet there.

The first half hour is undulating, gradually climbing until we reach a junction of footpaths. Here we turn left, and climb steeply for about an hour, taking us to the top of the Old Man, where we intend to have lunch.  If we make good time, we will have lunch on top of Dow Crag.  The 360 degree  views from the top on a clear day are out of this world!

Continuing after lunch, we drop down to a saddle between the Old Man and Dow Crag.  We then continue along and up the saddle to Dow Crag, walk along the crag and back down to the Walna Scar road, and back to the car park.

We intend to go to the Sun pub in Coniston village after the walk for afternoon tea.

Car park and beginning of walk shown by 2 blue circles next to each other, below.  See also attachment for same map.

Contact: Steve & Barbara, [email protected] (preferred), or 07479843232 by Friday 8.00 pm

Walks will be limited to a maximum as set by the walk leader (see above)

Booking is ESSENTIAL. You must book directly with the leader (usually by 8.00 pm on the Friday prior to the walk) as once the walk is fully booked there will be a waiting list. Also if you turn up on the day without booking you will be refused on the walk. If you have booked on a walk and find you are unable to attend please let the walk leader know as soon as possible so that the place is available to someone else.

We are trying to car share as much as possible, both to conserve fuel and because there is often limited parking at the start of a walk.  See Lancaster Walking Group WhatsApp group, either to offer a lift, or to see if a lift is available for that walk.
