Lancaster Walking Group: Weekend Away in Hartington, Peak District (April 21–24, 2023)

The third Lancaster Walking Group weekend away began on Friday, April 21, 2023, with the picturesque village of Hartington in the Peak District as our destination. We stayed at the charming Hartington Hall Youth Hostel, occupying all their private rooms. A group of 17 walkers joined the adventure, with some arriving in the morning and others in the late afternoon.

Day 1: Arrival and a Warm Welcome

Those who arrived early were treated to a delightful walk in the Manifold Valley, led by Steve and Barbara, which included a visit to the famous Thor’s Cave—a spectacular natural cavern. By the evening, everyone had gathered at the hostel for a warm welcome and a communal “Jacob’s Join” meal, where we shared a variety of delicious dishes.

Day 2: Exploring Shutlingsloe and Three Shires Head

Saturday morning saw an early start to secure parking at Gradbach, the base for the day’s 7.5-mile walk led by Paul. After a hearty breakfast in the communal kitchen, we set off for a scenic hike.

The route began with a steep climb, rewarding us with stunning views of Shutlingsloe, affectionately known as the “Matterhorn of the Peaks.” From there, we descended into the charming village of Wildboarclough, where we paused to visit the local church. A steep climb out of the village took us across the moors to Three Shires Head, the meeting point of Cheshire, Derbyshire, and Staffordshire. This idyllic spot made for a perfect lunch break.

Following lunch, a short climb out of the valley led us to field and river paths that guided us back to the car park. The evening was a mix of activities—some ventured to the local village pub for a meal, while others stayed at the hostel to enjoy leftovers from the Jacob’s Join. The night ended with laughter, socializing in the hostel’s lounges, and even a game of Scrabble.

Day 3: Hartington Circular Walk and Tissington Trail

Sunday’s walk, led by Steve and Barbara, began and ended at the hostel. After breakfast, the group set off from the hostel entrance, passing through fields and tackling a steep climb to the old Hartington Railway Station, complete with its preserved signal box.

After a coffee break, we joined the Tissington Trail, an old railway line repurposed as a foot and cycle path. The trail led us to Parsley Hay and its unique Istrian Stone Shelter. From there, we ventured across scenic field paths, eventually looping back to Hartington and climbing back to the hostel.

The day concluded with all 17 of us sharing a meal in the hostel’s restaurant, followed by another evening of camaraderie and conversation.
